How to Find Cheap Plus Size Clothing

Clothes don't always have to cost an arm and a leg. Smart shoppers have always known how to find good deals on anything. If you want cheap plus size clothing that doesn't scream "cheap," follow the rules of savvy shoppers who may wear discount styles, but you'd never know it:

  • Shop off-season: If you're looking for the perfect cheap swimsuit, don't shop at the beginning of swimsuit season. Although this is the time you'll have the biggest and most varied selection, it's also the time you'll pay the most. The same goes for winter coats and boots; shop mid- to late-season, when stores discount these items in preparation for new seasonal merchandise. By the time swimsuit season is half-over, you'll find the same bathing suits that retailed for almost $100 marked down to $75; at the end of the season, prices may be slashed 75-80 percent and you can score that expensive suit for a bargain. Even if you only get one or two wearings out of it that summer, you'll have it for next year. This won't work for women who always want to be on the cutting edge of fashion, but if having the latest isn't as important to you, shop at the right time for the best deals.
  • Go to the back of the store: Most stores feature their newer merchandise front and center and place sales and clearance racks toward the back. It may be crowded back there, but if you're looking for inexpensive pieces, it's worth taking a look at what those racks have to offer. Smart shoppers head to sales racks first; even in high-end shops like Nordstrom and Macy's, you can find designer duds marked down dramatically. Don't need a big fashion name on your back? Then you'll save even more money.
  • Look beyond the department store: There are many other places to shop besides the mall. Outlet stores often carry the same merchandise you find in regular stores. The biggest reasons clothes are sent to outlets are usually:
    • Irregularity: This may be a small error not easily detected at first glance. A button may be off-center or a stitch may be out of place. Small irregularities can add up to big savings and chances are, no one will be the wiser but you.
    • Overstock: In some cases, too many pieces of an item get ordered and there's not enough room in the store to display them all. Instead, they're shipped to an outlet, where you can find them at a discount.
    • Out of season: Whatever merchandise retail stores can't get rid of before new stock moves in often ends up at outlets. You may find summer dresses there while summer is still in full swing, but because regular stores put out fall clothing while it's still hot out, you can find and wear warm weather fashions for several more weeks, if not longer.

Besides outlets, try consignment shops and online auction sites like eBay for inexpensive fashions.

What to Look For

Once you find that perfect dress, top or slacks for a steal, make sure it's worth the price (no matter how low) by checking seams, buttons, zippers and fit. A $10 shirt is worthless if it doesn't fit you properly and if you spend all day adjusting it because it's uncomfortable. Make sure the color is flattering and that there are no rips, tears or soil on new items. If shopping at an outlet and you find a button missing, you may still want the piece, but it's worth asking a manager if he or she is willing to further knock down the price because the item is damaged.

Cheap and Chic

Just because you like bargains doesn't mean your style has to reflect that. Pair cheap clothing with the right accessories, a good handbag and the right shoes, and you can still look like a million bucks.
