Large Size Women's Fashionable Boots

From LoveToKnow Plussize

Large size women's fashionable boots can be a key wardrobe accessory. A trendy boot can complement a trendy wardrobe or can make a classic outfit fashion-forward.

Boots as Fashion

A woman may not be able to find a large selection of up-to-the-minute dresses and separates in the latest fashion trends in large sizes. But, she can probably find fashionable boots in her size.

Boots, like belts, are a terrific fashion accessory. They provide a finished look when worn under pants or with a skirt or dress. They can add to the sophistication of an outfit.

The right boot can also help make a woman look taller if:

  • The boot is the same color as the bottom of the pant, skirt or dress.
  • There is no gap between the top of the boot and the bottom of the skirt or dress.

Selecting Large Size Women's Fashionable Boots

Boots can be expensive. Here are a few tips on how to spend your boot money wisely:

  • Buy a boot that is comfortable so that you will wear it often enough to warrant the extra expense.
  • Consider buying less-expensive, fashion-oriented styles. You may only wear them one season because of the special style or color of the boot.
  • Don't hesitate to spend more on a fashion boot in a more classic style or color. You will probably wear them many seasons. Consider them a fashion investment.

Sizing

A woman's size does not necessarily reflect her shoe or calf size. She may wear a narrow or medium width shoe, or she may require a wide or extra wide shoe. Her calf might fit comfortably in a boot without the need for a wide calf style.

When selecting a boot it is important to:

  • Have your foot measured – The length of your foot may not change over time but your foot width might change. Your foot may become wider as you grow older or if you gain weight.
  • Try on boots in different widths – Different styles and manufacturers can result in different shoe widths:
    • Some manufacturers cut their boots larger over the instep, making a wider width boot.
    • A boot with a smaller toe area may require a wider width to feel comfortable.
    • A medium width for some manufacturers might be equal to a wide or extra wide with other manufacturers.
  • Pick a style that fits your foot and leg shape – A lace-up style is handy to adjust the boot around a narrow ankle. A zipper style with elastic gussets makes boot wearing a lot more comfortable for a wider calf.
  • Wear a boot that is tall enough – Most boots have a 14-inch to 15-inch high shaft that makes the boot end right below the knee. Boots that only cover up to the mid-calf will make your calf look larger. And, if worn with a skirt or dress, will make your whole body appear shorter and wider than it is.

Many women do not wear a shoe that is wide enough. They may not realize that they need a wider width. Or, they may not be able to find the width they need in the style they want to wear.

The variety of shoe widths and calf widths has caused several manufacturers to provide a wider variety of sizing combinations. For example, David Tate boots are available in medium wide and extra wide shoe widths with calf choices of either X-wide (16 inches to 18 inches) or XX-wide (18 inches to 20 inches).

If you don't need a wide boot but you are looking for a boot with a slightly wider calf:

  • Try wearing a larger size – Boot widths grade up slightly with each size. A size 10 boot might be slightly wider than a size 9 boot.
  • Measure your calf – Measure your calf at the widest point. Use a tape measure or a string that you can then measure with a ruler or yardstick.
  • Know the calf size of the boot – Boot widths noted on the shoe boxes or in the catalogs are usually for the smallest size. Try the boot on before buying if you are in a retail store. Ask the customer service representative for the width of your size if you are buying from a catalog.

Shopping Tips

  • Shop early in the season – Fashionable boots sell fast and the retailer may not reorder fashion-forward boots all sizes, widths and colors.
  • Special order if possible – Don't hesitate to place a special order early in the season if you don't find your size or favorite color in stock. Don't wait until mid-season or later to place your order since it might take six to eight weeks to receive a special order.

Hi Paulette. Unfortunately, manufacturers tend to stick with making what the majority of the population will buy or wear. That can be tough on the minority who needs larger sizes than what's currently offered. Perhaps you can contact the boot retailers and see if they can consider your idea--you're not the only one out there who needs larger boots. Good luck!

YOU NEED TO MAKE SOME BOOTS WITH A EXTRA, EXTRA LARGE CALVES. SOME WOMEN HAVE CALVES LARGER THAN A 21 INCHES.
