What Is Linen?

Linen is one of the oldest woven fabrics in existence. It is made from the stalk of the flax plant. It is about three times stronger than cotton and very durable. Historically, linen was made for and worn solely by royalty. In addition to being strong, linen is smooth and usually stays free of lint. The original hue of linen is somewhere between white and a light tan. However, it is easily dyed without ruining the luster of the fabric, which comes from the natural wax found in the plant. It conducts heat well and is very absorbent, making it a cool garment.

It is expensive to manufacture linen because of the nature of the flax plant, which is temperamental by nature. Getting the fibers for the linen from the flax stalk must be done by hand, which adds to the overall expensive nature of linen. In some instances, the stalks are processed on the same machines use for cotton fabric-making; however, this method of mass production produces a lower-quality product.

Caring For Linen

It wrinkles easily, but can be ironed without damaging the fabric. However, it’s important to note that if you iron a crease into the same spot over and over again, the linen threads can easily break because of constant heat and wear. This applies to all creased areas of the fabric, including cuffs, collars, hems, etc. Linen also wears well over time, becoming softer and finer every time you wash it. It is considered to be an elegant, luxury fabric that wears well on a multitude of sizes.

Additionally, while linen is a very durable fabric, you should take care to hang it up whenever possible. The same tearing that occurs when linen is ironed too many times can also occur when it is folded frequently as well.

Fabulous Plus Size Linen Skirts

Skirts are one of the more versatile styles for linen fabrics. Long or short, flared or straight --- there is virtually a plus size linen skirt for every plus size body type:

  • Apple: Characterized by a thick middle and more slender legs, the best linen skirt styles for apple shapes is an A-line, or slightly flared, knee-length skirt. This style works because the slight flare helps to camouflage the stomach area and the short style shows off great legs. Look for light prints or intricate embroidery to jazz up a casual look or a matching jacket with solid-colored cami for a more professional look.
  • Pear: Similar to apple shapes, you want an A-line style that helps to hide the heavy hips and thighs that are found on plus size women with a pear shape. However, pears should trend towards darker, solid colors to add balance to their overall silhouette. Pair dark linen skirt styles with light, airy tops and bright accessories. A pair of sexy shoes completes the ensemble.
  • Busty: Since busty plus sizes are usually top heavy, just about any style of linen skirt is fair game. Experiment with styles that are long and romantic or short and flirty. Remember colors according to season, meaning light blues, pinks, yellows and whites for spring and summer and rich reds, deep blues and purples, black and grey for fall. The best part about linen is that it is available in so many different colors. So try something new to spice up your wardrobe.

A great-fitting linen skirt is a must have for every plus size wardrobe. Just be sure to follow care instructions for the material. Take advantage of the versatile nature of this fabric and enjoy mixing and matching plus size linen skirts with the other fabulous pieces in your closet.
