Plus Size Rompers

From LoveToKnow Plussize

You may think of a child’s playsuit or a onesie when you think of rompers, but playsuits come in all shapes and sizes these days, and a pair of plus size rompers are great for a barbecue or a beach or pool coverup.

Shopping for Plus Size Rompers

Because rompers do denote childhood, it’s not surprising that a search for grownup rompers will actually yield you a lot of naughty lingerie. There’s nothing wrong with lingerie, we all love it, and often times the saucier the better, but if what you’re looking for is a cute and casual summer playsuit, you just want to go straight for the goods and leave the lingerie for a very different shopping experience.

With rompers, you really just want simplicity, and they don’t need to be fitted, which makes for ease of shopping. The terry rompers by Xhilaration, available at Target and also Amazon, are easy to care for and inexpensive. They are the perfect item to wear to and from the pool, especially if you’re planning a hard workout and there’s a nip in the air.

Another very basic and inexpensive terry romper is available at Dr. Leonard’s, a site that specializes in health care but also carries a range of apparel. The rompers come in sizes up to 3X and because the top looks more like a camisole, can be worn as cozy loungewear as well as practical beach or swimwear. They zip up the front and tie with a sweet bow.

Swimsuits Just for Us, purveyors of swimwear designed especially for the curvy set, carries a cute terry romper. It is white, 100 percent cotton, strapless and features two front pockets, thus adding convenience to charm and fun.

Make Your Own Plus Size Rompers

There’s no question about it, clothes that are designed just for your body will look better than almost anything you can buy off the rack. If you’ve been thinking you’d like to learn to sew and just haven’t gotten around to signing up for a class, your need for cute rompers is just the right excuse. Almost nothing is easier to make than basic rompers, although you can certainly add details if you like. Vintage styles going back to the 1930s, where rompers were often worn as exercise wear (you’ve probably seen them in movies showing dancers rehearsing), can be very elaborate, with ruffles and bows. Depending on what you want the rompers for, this may be just your speed!

A good source to begin looking for patterns is Lanetz Living, which has a category just for plus size. Unfortunately, since their whole collection is vintage patterns, items come and go quickly, so that the only rompers they might have in stock at a given time will be children-sized patterns.

Another great site for buying patterns is Mom’s Patterns, which carries vintage and retro patterns. For those who love an old-fashioned look but are relatively new to sewing, a modern pattern for a vintage garment is much easier to work with than a vintage pattern. Mom’s Patterns has a pattern for plus size rompers and jumpsuits with a sailor motif and they even feature side seam pockets for practicality. If you prefer something shorter, that’s the beauty of sewing it yourself, you can adjust accordingly.

Patterns of the Past is a fun site to shop and will have jumpsuit and romper patterns from the 1940s through to the 1990s. They also have a section specifically for larger women. Of course, as you become more experienced with sewing, you can adjust a pattern so that if you find a pattern you absolutely have to have and it’s only in a misses’ size, you can tailor it to your shape.

If you just want something insanely simple and have no time, get a terry tube top and sew it to a pair of otherwise-boring shorts. Voila, instant romper!

Hi Sharon-- Thanks for commenting. Unfortunately, you're right, plain cotton rompers are incredibly hard to find. We'll keep looking; if you're a store owner who specializes in this item, we'd love to hear from you!
