Plus Size Women's Jewelry

From LoveToKnow Plussize

Plus size women's jewelry is not as hard to come by as you may think. Now that fashion designers are taking plus size clothing more seriously and creating some complimentary ensembles, they are also producing jewelry that not only fits a plus-sized woman, but is flattering as well. Let's just say that jewelry is the perfect accessory to any outfit.

Types of Plus Size Women's Jewelry

For the most part, jewelry is jewelry. Most of the pieces in specialty shops or department stores are made for any size woman. But there are some items that really don't fit a full-figured gal. Like your clothes, you don't want be pulling at or fixing your jewelry all day long because it doesn't fit right. You want it to be comfortable and well-fitted, because again, just like your clothing, you don't want to be messing with it all day. Let's take a look at some of styles of plus size jewelry for women.

Necklaces

Plus size necklaces usually run in length above 18 inches, unless you want a choker style. Some store carry them in 24- and 32-inch lengths as well. Necklaces are usually worn loosely around the neck so they fall slightly below the collarbone. The best styles for women of size are:

  • Pendant or circle
  • Strand
  • Chain
  • Choker
  • Lariat
  • Drop

If you find that your necklace is still too short or you just want to lengthen it, you can purchase a necklace extender. This device will lengthen your necklace by up to a few inches. They come in a variety of styles and colors, and the extenders are available for necklaces, bracelets and ankle bracelets.

Bracelets

Plus size bracelets start at around eight inches and some styles go up to 11 inches. Bracelets should fit comfortably on your wrists where you don't have to worry about them falling off your hand. Bracelets that leave marks or indentations in your wrists, or ones that barely fit over your hand when putting them on are too small. It is best to measure your wrist before you start shopping. Some great women's plus size bracelets include:

  • Bangle
  • Cuff
  • Stretch
  • Dangle
  • Charm
  • Leather wristband
  • Identification bracelets
  • Tennis

Earrings

A pair of nice earrings can help balance out a fuller face. Longer earrings will elongate your face, making it appear slimmer. But don't overdo it; too much earring can be distracting. Remember, earrings will be one of the first things people will notice when they look at you. Earrings can be clip-on or pierced -- it's your preference, although some of the larger drop or dangle earrings may stay in place better if you buy the pierced styles. Some earrings for plus size women are:

  • Hoop
  • Post
  • Dangle
  • Drop

Rings

Rings are really one of the most personal kinds of jewelry. Every woman loves a different style; each wears rings on different fingers too. The only difference between rings made for plus size women and those that aren't are the sizes. Plus size rings that are ordered online or purchased at a department store are available to a size 15 (search hard, you will find them). However, most jewelers can design rings in a larger size if needed. Some styles of plus size rings include:

  • Wedding
  • Engagement
  • Mother's
  • Birthstone
  • Claddaugh
  • School

Caring for Your Jewelry

All of your plus size jewelry should be treated with care. Avoid wearing pieces when you are handling harsh chemicals or cleaning products. To keep them look their best, wipe all jewelry after each use with a polishing cloth or clean with a jewelry cleaner or a gentle soap. Allow to air dry.

Hi Kelly, I'm sorry to hear about your daughter's problem. I take it she can't wear hoop earrings, which come in a variety of sizes and usually have longer bars that go into the earring holes? If not, it sounds as if her ears may need a break from time to time so that they don't get infected. If she wears earrings during the day, they should be removed at night as well as treated with antibacterial solution. Unfortunately, I don't know of any retailers who specialize in this market because most of the shops who cater to young girls will probably only carry the small earrings.

I'm a jewelry artist, started making large ring sizes for ladies since my own grand mother wears size 13. All my rings (cameos, insects, animals, filigree, etc) are available up to size 15. I just purchased the equipment to make it up to size 22 which I am expecting to be offering by March 2008. My prices are quite fair & my designs are unique. I do charge a small extra for larger sizes due to the extra material required. You can view my entire collection at thesilverart.com

Thank you! Blue Crockatt
