Since ballet class will tell you quite a bit about what you need to wear there and probably direct you on where to find it, keep reading to find out more about the fashion side of ballet skirts. For most people, ballet skirts are best saved for a fun night on the town. Some women, however, will feel perfectly comfortable wearing them on a normal day.

Find Plus Sized Ballet Skirts

Here are a few sites to visit in your pursuit for the perfect plus sized ballet skirts:

  • River's Edge Dancewear offers sizes up to XL. Choose from pink, red, black, royal, and white. They're available for $46.40.
  • You Go Girl Dancewear also has nineteen-inch ballet skirts. They're available for $22.00 and they claim that one size fits all.
  • eBay is another site to keep your eye on. There are plenty of ballet skirts and you never know what size/color combination will show up next.
  • Kaboodle has a mini ballet skirt available for $22.00 in sizes up to 14. You can also special order other sizes. This one has large box pleats and is available in tan, burgundy, or black microfiber. It's probably best suited for the younger crowd.
  • Amazon's Burgundy Glitter Floral Wrap Ballet Skirt with matching Hair Scrunchie isn't what you'd traditionally think of when presented with the idea of wearing a ballet skirt. It seems to be tutu inspired but it's more wearable for everyday. This one's available in sizes up to 2X from $12.99-$23.99.

What to Wear with Them

If you're wearing your ballet attire for fashion, there's more to play around with than what classes call for. You'll need to wear a somewhat fitted shirt—tank, long-sleeved, half-length sleeves, and so on. Neutral, muted, or pastel tones achieve the ballerina "look" best. You'll also want to consider tights, leggings, or even capri leggings—whichever make you most comfortable.

Shoes can vary (again, while wearing the skirt for fashion, not actual dance). Ballet flats are an obvious choice but they won't make your legs look as thin and elongated as they could. Strappy sandals with short, thin heels will make your legs look thinner, longer, and more toned.

Stilettos, however, may not make the best choice and please, never pair tall boots with your ballet skirt! In some cases, delicate ankle boots with small heels may complement, but you'll have to use your judgment combined with your own personal style to make that call. In many cases, boots with short, full skirts should be skipped over.

When it comes to jewelry, keep it simple. If you like chunky jewelry, you don't have to leave it all at home. You just have to leave most of it at home. If you walk around with multiple oversized accessories on, you'll wind up looking like a discount rack at a boutique, and you'll overpower your skirt in no time.

Choose one chunky accessory (like oversized beads or a wide, wooden bangle) and keep the rest dainty. Some of the best accents are pearls and diamonds.

Makeup will look best if it's understated. Some may even say to go for an ethereal look with a hint of shimmer on the lids, cheekbones, and lips. It plays well with the girlish charm of the flirty skirt. Of course, if you love to shock, you could go for dramatic smoky eyes and a red lip a la Kat Von D.

Why Wear Them

If you needed another push in the right direction to wear a plus size ballet skirt for the sake of fashion, consider these reasons:

  • They're fluffy, so they can disguise curves you'd rather hide. Try on quite a few to make sure you find the ones that slim you down rather than build you out, as full skirts can sometimes do.
  • A ballet skirt is one of the most feminine things you can wear. Pairing it with a corset (especially if your best asset is your chest!) will have you feeling completely girly. You'll ooze grace and elegance while appearing seductive.
  • They're fun!

A Final Word

Plus size ballet skirts are part of a trend that features daintiness and feminine touches. Don't spend a lot of money on one because you may not find yourself reaching for it year after year as you would with more traditional pieces. However, don't be afraid to embrace the trends. Fashion is all about trying new things and having fun!
