Tall Plus Size Coat

Finding a tall plus size coat can prove to be a daunting task. If the color isn't the one you're looking for, the sleeves could be too short or the length of the jacket itself could be lacking. It seems as if tall sizes—especially in plus sizes—are incredibly hard to come by. You may find yourself wanting to write to companies yourself, "Hey, what about us tall gals? We get cold too!" Before you whip out your pen and paper, read on.

Even if you can't find what you're looking for in mall stores like Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug Plus, or even Torrid, don't be discouraged. Sometimes mall stores just don't carry the extra-tall sizes some of us need. That leads us to online shopping. Hey, it could be worse. You can shop on your lunch break at work without ever leaving your desk. Shopping on foot may not be possible due to traffic, distance, and time constraints. So, get clicking:

J. Jill has tall sizes ranging from 4 to 20, and their coat collection is classic and to die for. Here are a few examples:

• The Tie-Front Trench in black will take you to work, out with friends, shopping on a breezy Saturday afternoon, and more. At $149, this is a steal since it's not a trendy piece. The tall sizes are 43-43.5" long. There's a hood that hides inside the collar when not needed, an elastic hem, and zip front with tie.
• The Stratus Topper in tan will go with your business casual attire. It's a bit shiny, 38" long, linen, and easy to care for (machine washable). Since it's a neutral, casual piece, you'll get a lot of wear out of this $139 coat.
• The Carissa Retro Coat in shale plaid usually runs $199, but at the time of this writing, is on sale for $99.99. It's 39.5" long, so you're sure to stay warm! There won't be much opportunity for your jacket to ride up and expose your lower back to the frigid air in this one.

Most of the tall sizes go up to extra-large (xlt, on the drop-down size list). That's the equivalent of an 18T or 20T, 43-45" bust, 35.5-37.5" waist, and 45.5-47.5" hip measurements. See the sizing chart for more measurements.

Avenue has a Floral Gardenia Trench Coat that's perfect for Spring! It's 33" long, double breasted, and unfortunately, dry clean only. Get it in sizes 14/16-26/28.

Even Amazon has tall plus size coats. Look for the BGSD Women's Leather Walking Coat in black leather. It's designed to be knee length, so even if you're very tall, you should be able to pull it off without it looking too short.

Just My Size has a few coats in long lengths. They aren't labeled "tall" but here are a few longer styles to check out:

• The Stretch Twill Safari Jacket in khaki, black, or white will make an excellent addition to your cool weather wardrobe (any color!). It's 29.75" long. Bonus: this one's washable.
• A little bit shorter (26"), the Sateen Jacket in aqua, khaki, or black, may work for some tall girls (especially those who are mostly leg!). It's a military style jacket with gold buttons and a tie belt. The aqua color is especially pretty for warmer months when the nights are cool.

Since a tall plus size coat isn't easy to come by in stores—or even online during some seasons—you should add them to your wardrobe when you get the chance to snatch one up. Here are a few basics you shouldn't resist:

• Black leather
• Brown leather
• Light, and ready for Springtime
• A tailored coat, possibly a peacoat, in a color that makes you feel beautiful. If red makes you feel unbelievable, choose red. Love pink? Grab a pink coat in your favorite shade.
• This one's optional, but nice to have: a light coat, perhaps a trench coat, in a neutral color like khaki or army green.

With these coats in your closet, you'll have something for every occasion, every outfit (unless especially formal), and every pair of shoes.
