Women's Plus Tall Pants
From LoveToKnow Plussize
It used to prove challenging for a woman of above average height to find a pair of pants that would cover her ankles, but women's plus tall pants aren't that hard to find these days. Thank goodness!
Shop for Women's Plus Tall Pants
Shopping online is fun and you can do it on your lunch break much more easily than you can skip on over to the mall and fight the crowds for your perfect pair of non-"high waters." Here are a few places to begin your search.
- Metro Style has a pair of Palazzo Pants in the Miami Fit in black, size 16T (34" inseam). They can be worn casually or dressed up for work.
- Torrid has plus size jeans with various inseam lengths. You can find a 34" inseam in their Dereon Mystic style, and a 33.5" inseam in their Baby Phat Winter, and Baby Phat Metallic Wash styles.
- The Avenue is amazing when it comes to tall plus size pants for women. Almost every pair of pants they have in stock—that includes everything from leggings to jeans—is available in tall sizes. Be sure to check the descriptions, though, because their tall inseam isn't one number all the way across the board. For example, the Denim Lite Fashion Stretch Jeans have an inseam of 35", but the Linen Rayon Trouser with Comfort Waistband's inseam is approximately 33".
Complement Your Tall Pants
Accessorizing tall pants is easy. A few key things to keep in mind:
- If you do choose to wear heels, you'll still need to get an even longer length. If you're over six feet tall, finding a length long enough to wear with four-inch heels could be challenging.
- If you want to wear heels and flats with the same style of pants, you would be best served to check out temporary hemming options or purchase two pairs with different lengths. Some tall women prefer to never wear heels because of the height they add. That makes shopping for the right inseam a little simpler.
Blue Jeans
Blue jeans are the little black dress of casualwear. You can dress them up or down, and there are so many different washes and cuts, you can choose them for almost anything other than work (and sometimes even then) or formal events. Wear darker washes for dressing up, and lighter washes for dressing down.
Got a great pair of red heels you want to wear but aren't sure how? Buy a longer length than you usually would—in a dark wash—and pair the two items together. Top off with a fitted, sexy shirt and you're ready for a night out.
Dress Pants
On the grand scale of things, dress pants can be sort of boring. They're usually available in neutral colors, and wearing those hot pink jelly flats you bought at the beginning of spring is probably not an option (for the pants or for work). You can, however, find neutral-toned flats, loafers, sandals, and pumps with classy details everywhere from Payless to Zappos' designer lines. If you like to appear even taller, choosing a shoe in a similar color to your pants will draw the eye up and down, making you appear taller.
Somewhere in Between
Somewhere between dress pants and blue jeans is a world full of colorful pants, khakis, workout attire, and more. These can sometimes be the most fun pants to try to dress up or down. Here are a few suggestions:
- With yoga pants, if you're just running errands, consider Fit-Flops. They go with the workout theme and tone up your legs while you're just doing your own thing outside the gym. Fit-Flops come in so many colors and styles, you won't know how you survived without them. They generally have a slightly chunky base, so you may want to choose your workout pants in a slightly longer length if possible, to accommodate the thicker sole. On top, slip into a long tank or cami and a zip-up or pullover hoodie.
- Khakis can be dressed up or down. Try a button-up shirt or a tee, or both at the same time. Even a sweater will work if it's chilly out. Anything from flip-flops to dressy black or brown boots will complement these.
- Patterned pants aren't a no-go for plus size women, but you should opt for a small pattern (who wants a large pattern anyway?). And don't shy away from bright colors if you're tall; you don't have to worry about looking short in them.
To balance your women's plus tall pants with a pattern or a bright color, opt for neutrals on top. Ideally, your shoes will be the same color as your pants, though tall women can get away with wearing shoes that match their tops in some cases since they have height to spare.
A Final Word
Shopping for longer inseams is easier than ever now. The fashion industry finally seems to have realized that not everyone is of average height, and purchasers have, too. So now you're finally able to find women's plus tall pants without too much trouble.
When you do, don't be afraid to play around with the accessories, the patterns, the colors, etc. Tall women have an advantage: there's plenty of height there, so it's hard for a fashion experiment to leave you looking short.
