Women's Tall Shirts

From LoveToKnow Plussize

For the plus size woman who is taller than average, finding women’s tall shirts that offer enough length in the sleeves and torso is important. While there are ways to skirt around the sleeve length issue—buying shirts with short sleeves or three-quarter length sleeves—there will be times when long sleeves are necessary. Also, the torso always needs to be the right length, to fully fit a tall frame without revealing skin or underwear.

In the spring and summer, wearing long-sleeve shirts isn’t necessary, but when cold weather moves in, having your arms covered will help keep you warm. You don’t want your shirt sleeves to stop before they hit your wrists, so where can you find tops that are made especially for your long arms and statuesque frame?

  • Jessica London: Long a full figure market staple, this company knows that plus size women come in tall, too. A perfect layering shirt, this moleskin big shirt is available in a wide range of colors, which can be mixed and matched with coordinating tee shirts. It’s also a great top to sport alone. Available in 33-inch lengths.
  • JCPenney: This popular department store caters to women of many different special clothing needs, including petite, tall and plus size. A long-sleeved top like this lends itself to workday fashions and the vertical lines will help slenderize you. This retailer carries a variety of options in women’s tall shirts that can be worn for work or for play.
  • Plus Woman: This online shop offers a selection of comfortable fashions for the woman of size. Unlike some retailers, the clothes are modeled by actual full-figured women (instead of women wearing padding or non plus-sized models at all!) so you can see how they’ll really look. You have your option of shirt lengths in many cases; some are available in lengths up to 45 inches for an additional charge.
  • Catherines: You can find some of the trendiest fashions at this store and Web site. Like many plus size clothing shops today, Catherines wants women of size to find clothes that fit and make them feel beautiful. While not all shirts sold are made for tall women, take note of the length—in almost all cases, this helpful information is listed.
  • Lane Bryant: This retailer offers a variety of free-flowing tunics that forgive many body flaws. Shirt lengths vary quite a bit, but there are quite a few that measure 30 inches and longer.

Points to Consider

  • If finding shirts with sleeves that cover your wrists is too difficult, you always have the option of wearing short sleeve or sleeveless tops (though this may not be suitable for the workplace). You’ll still be concerned about overall length, but the sleeve worry will be eliminated. You can still maintain a professional appearance in a short-sleeve top by pairing it with a blazer.
  • To make sure you get your shirts in the length you need, measure your torso from the nape of your neck to where you’d like your tops to fall. Also measure the length of your arms. If shopping online, check for the shirt measurements so you know if you’re getting a shirt that’s long enough and with long enough sleeves.
  • Tunics are longer than regular tops, so if you see tunics for plus size women available, they will probably be a suitable length for you. Belted tunics can be very flattering on women with hourglass shapes.
  • Your top should always fall, at a minimum, to the waistband of your pants or skirt, but longer is preferable. If it just meets your band and you bend over, you’re likely to flash any bystanders. To prevent that, buy shirts that are long enough for your frame. Cropped tops don’t belong in the workplace at all and for plus size women, this outdated trend just doesn’t work.

With the availability of plus size fashions for women of all heights, finding shirts that are stylish and that fit you should be a breeze.
