I'm 5'11 size 18 bottom 22 top and would love to get into plus size modelling. I have no idea where to begin. any suggestions

-- Contributed by: T-Byrd

Hi Trish. While I can't answer your question because we're not agents or in the business, I can say that your height and age may be factors that will work against you. Generally, even in the plus market, taller and younger models are preferred. However, there are markets for mature models that might be willing to work with you. Also, if you're not suited for runway work, you might be well-suited for head shots or even hair modeling, where size might not be an issue. Your best bet is to check with local modeling agencies and ask their advice about the direction you can take, if you're serious about pursuing it. Good luck!

I am 5foot5&1/2 inches and a size 14/16. I have a lot of people ask me if I model my hair because it is red and relatively long. I am 41 and photogenic...should I bother trying to be a plus size model or is it unrealistic? Thank you

-- Contributed by: Trish

Hi Elizabeth. In general, full figure models can start at size 10 (which is NOT plus size, I know) and go to about a 14-16. Even in the plus size market, it helps to be on the smaller end of the scale, BUT it really depends on the agency. One of the biggest concerns is that the models be well-proportioned. You'll have to submit (or have her submit) photos to an agency if you don't live close enough to visit in person. You will probably have to pay for professional modeling shots, but that should be one of your few expenses. The cost depends on the photographer. Some agencies will suggest a photographer, but this price can differ a good deal. Plus Size Modeling Agencies, How to Become a Plus Size Model and Plus Size Models Portfolios have more information. Good luck!

This question is concerning my daughter. She is now 23 and very pretty and plus sized. she is about 5'10 and 250 lbs. Being tall she doesn't look that big. Ever since she was 5years old people used to walk up to me and say to watch out because she is so pretty someone will take her. Once when I was getting a pic of her at a studio they the photographer was so in awe of her she went to get a magazine to show me the model "niki" that she swore my daughter looked like. Which she did. Now at 23 She is beautiful. She doesn't need alot of makeup, she is pretty without it but it enhances her looks even more. She can wear any hair style and hat and look great, and she is extremely photogenic. She doesn't think she is small enough to be a model. What size do they want full figured or plus size models to be? When I went to visit her I had glamour shots done and even then the photographer said she should submit some photos for head shots at a modeling agency. Where can I get her started and with limited funds how expensive is it usually to get her started? Can I email photos of her to a company? Is that just ignorant of me to ask? Thanks for your help and God bless.

-- Contributed by: Elizabeth

Thank you for your comment, Sharonda. Your positive attitude is much more beautiful than being a size 2.

-- Contributed by: Del Sandeen

lisa i agree with you im 22 and have never been the "barbie type" and i hate it when skinny girls talk about how big they are in front of me, but like you i think girls need someone they can look at and be like " you know what she's beautiful, even if she's not a size 2"

-- Contributed by: sharonda

Hi Lisa. I don't know about your being too large. Only a reputable full-figured modeling agent would be able to tell you that. Even though plus size models are expected to be larger than a size 10-12, I know that some agencies prefer their models to be within a certain size range. Please read this entire article as well as ALL of the comments...we've had several readers bring up your concerns. Good luck!

Hi. to all... i am 5'8 212 pounds and 15 years of age. I have ALOT of people tell me i am very pretty and that i could be a mmodel...but i have also heard that i am too large. I have decided i want to model. but not for being in a magazine or for the publicity or whatever...but i want to do it for girls like me...so they can feel beautiful no matter what size or age they are... im so tired of everyone having to fit into this "barbie doll wanna be look alike" it just doesnt work for everyone. My only problem with the modeling is...i dont know how to go about it..can anyone on here help me?

-- Contributed by: Lisa

Hi Shavona. I'm no modeling agent, but my advice would be to take different head shots, some with minimal makeup and some with more dramatic makeup (you can visit a department store makeup counter for tips). Make sure the photos show you from all angles. For body shots, you should wear a flattering outfit and also make sure to capture different poses, which should be basic and show a little of your personality, but not be too provocative. Above all, you need to make an effort to look your very best because a model's portfolio is like a resume. Good luck!

-- Contributed by: Del Sandeen

Hi all I dont know whom to address this to so if you have helpful info please respond/reply. I am 26yrs old 5'5 200lbs I want to model. I have been told I have the face and skin for headshots because I take beautiful close ups, no make only wear lip gloss, and I need to know what type of head shots I need to do for a portfolio and in addition to that I what type of body shot pictures do I need to place in my portfolio as well. I am "green" as they say to the whole modeling thing I dreamed of modeling when I was younger but after having children I put on some weight, whom am I kidding I put on alot of weight. Someone help I just wanna make an attempt to follow a long lost dream that has never been forgotten.

-- Contributed by: Shavona White

Hi Lisa. Realistically, the younger you are, the better your chances of becoming a model, unless you're looking to work in the mature model arena. Your first step is to get a portfolio together and then contact agencies who represent full figured models. Also, read over all of the comments attached to this article--there's further information in them. Good luck!

I have always want to become a plus size model and I wish that I had the finance to take portfolio so that can send or show them to the top fashion industry that uses plus size model. What should or what can I do to make this happen and what could be my down fall when it comes to age

-- Contributed by: Lisa Croskey

Dear Ana, Without knowing the policies of the country you're in, we're really not able to say. It's in your best interest to see what the employment laws are (especially since you've already stated you can't be paid while you're in your current position for outside work). It also depends on whether or not you're willing to leave your current position to pursue modeling full time. As for using the same products as people in the Netherlands although you're a brown-skinned woman, I don't think that matters much at all. Most skin care products are made to work on any color skin.

-- Contributed by: Del Sandeen

I am a tall size 14 lawyer with a shapely body and perfect skin. I would like to be a plus size model but cannot be paid while I am in my current position because I am not permitted to receive any payment outside the work I do. I would however like to model skin care products in England. my skin is however black but I use the same products and live in the Netherlands. Is this possible?

Hi Cortney. Thanks for commenting. It's nice to hear that you know how gorgeous you are. We're not an agency or represent models in any way, however; we're just here to provide information about how you can go about researching a career in fashion modeling. Good luck to you!

Hi! My name is cortney and I am 19 and have been wanting to be a model for only about a year now and before I never thought I could because I have always been on the chubby side. LOL>> Thats what I thought, but I finally got it in my head that I am gorgeous. It only took a thousand and a half people to tell me so.Well to get to the point I would greatly appreciate if maybe you would consider accepting me. Thank you for giving me a chance to comment.

-- Contributed by: Cortney Brooke Graham

Tina, you have a great attitude! It's not about your size or your age, it's about how you feel about yourself and you sound extremely confident. I'm sure you're gorgeous just as you are. Other full-figured women who aren't feeling as confident as you should definitely take your advice. Thanks for commenting.

Hi my name is Tina.I just want to say that I just turned 45 and still look hot. I want to show the world that no matter how old you become older full figured women still have it going on. I am spanish with dark shoulder length hair and deep blue.I have been told that i look like a young version of Liz Taylor and i take that to be the most highest praze there is.I dont care what people say about me and i what to make a difference in the world to let full figured women know you dont have to be ashamend of your body.Love your self no matter what. And if any one knows that it is me i have had more doors shut in my face due to the fact that i was not your size 3.

how do i start out on being a plus size model

-- Contributed by: sandra

Hi Desiree. Read all of the information in this article as well as all of the comments. Your first step will be to get a portfolio together as well as contacting a reputable modeling agency that represents full figured women. A good agent should be able to tell you what you need to do from there; they're also responsible for finding you work, but they cannot guarantee you work. Anyone who says they can "guarantee" you work should be approached with caution! Good luck!

Hello I am a 20 year old young adult who would love to become a plus size model but i am not sure how to get started

-- Contributed by: Desiree Dana

Hi Meyosha. Honestly, I can't tell you what your chances are; only a qualified modeling agency can do that. From what I know about agencies, however, I will say that the younger you are, the better your chances. You may definitely have a disadvantage due to being out of your twenties (although you are by no means, "old"!). As for the tattoo, it depends on where it is and how big it is. If it's somewhere prominent, your modeling success may be affected. The best thing you can do is contact an agency in your area and talk to someone with experience in the business. But make sure you read this article as well as all of the comments; we've provided additional information that may help you there. Good luck!

Hello, My name is Meyosha, and I am interested in becoming a plus size model.I am 5'8 and 195lbs. I have done alot of research and I feel i may have what it takes to become a plus sized model. The only negatives I feel may have are that, although i am told i dont look my age, I sometimes feel i may be to old to persue a career in modeling. I am 30 years old. Am I too old to become a model. I also fear that i may be turn away because i have a tattoo. what are my chances

Hi tonia, S.Michelle and Fawn-- Your first step will be to get a portfolio together. You can either use the services of a professional photographer or save some money by asking a friend who's VERY skilled with a camera to take some photos. These should include head shots as well as full body shots in appropriate clothing. Next, you'll have to contact a modeling agency who represents plus size women. These agencies aren't as numerous as agencies who represent younger, thinner models. Reputable agencies will not charge you money, but are there to represent you. Realistically, the younger and taller you are, the better your chances will be. Please read earlier comments as well as this article to take the right steps to see if modeling is right for you.

Hello:) Im 18 years old and 180 Lbs. A size 14-16 and 5'10". I'm looking around trying to figure out what Kind of opportunities can be found for plus-size modeling in the Mid-West. I live in Southern Indiana and feel pretty limited to my modeling options. Since I am just now thinking I'm matured enough to test the Modeling Career waters, I was wondering if you had any guidence for me:)

Hi, I am a full figured woman who is 35+ years of age and I am interested in modeling. I am 5'10, wear a size 22 dress and 10-10.5 shoe. Many people have told me that I favor Queen Latifah. I have been asked many different times through out my life if I modeled? What can I do at my age to get started?

-- Contributed by: S. Michelle

Hi Sonja,

Unfortunately, yes, modeling agencies are sometimes highly particular. It's very unlikely for petite women (under 5'4) to find modeling jobs because print and runway almost always prefer tall models. Even agencies who represent petite models use a height of 5'7 as their maximum guideline and 5'7 is quite a bit taller than the average American woman's height. Also, younger women are more sought after than older women.

However, since you're more interested in hair and face modeling, you may have better luck. Are there any beauty salons in your area who are looking for models? You might try asking there. Good luck!

Hi.I have been full-figured all of my adult life, and full figure modeling has been a secret desire of mine. Facial modeling in particular (cosmetics, hair, etc). The information I've read here has been enlightening, but I'm concerned as to whether or not I could even be eligible. I'm 38, African-American, and 5'3". Do agencies autmoatically rule out based on age or height?

-- Contributed by: Sonja

Hi Afhor and Melissa,

Thanks for taking the time to comment. Afhor, "money hungry agencies" are definitely out there, which is why we tell model hopefuls to stay away! Agencies are supposed to find you work and reputable ones do not charge you money. You will, however, have to pay a photographer to get a professional portfolio together. Also, steer clear of agencies who "guarantee" you work.

If you live in a major metropolitan area like New York, L.A., Chicago, etc., you'll have better luck, but you'll have to find the agencies in your area who represent full figured models because not all will.

You should work on getting a portfolio together and then contacting agencies in your area. Good luck!

I just want to see if I could get some information on modeling. I'm a full figured woman and want to hopefully get started in the modeling career. If anyone has any information then please let me know.

Hello There,

I've been interested in modeling for a couple of years. I'm 5"7" and 206lbs. The problem is, I keep meeting money hungry agencies. Help! I am very hopeful that my dream will become a reality with your help. I'm smiling. Thanks. Afhor

Hi Keisha, Thanks for commenting. Use the information in this article and read through the rest of the comments here (there's some information in them). You'll need to contact a modeling agency that represents models of various sizes, but except for agencies who represent petite models, most agencies want to see women who are at least 5'9 and taller. You'll need to get a portfolio together of photographs of yourself and while you'll probably have to pay a photographer for this, you should never have to pay a REPUTABLE agency.

Hello, I am a senior teenage girl, and I have always wanted to model but I was not the perfect size. Now, I see that full figured women are hitting the scene and I want to be part of that. Please let me knoe more about what I can do to be part! Thanks so much! Keisha Coleman

Hi Quiana and Lakisha--

Thanks for commenting. I really hope you will take the advice in this article and hopefully, make some contacts in the full figure modeling industry. You're right, not all models have to be a size 4. There are many plus size women making a living modeling. Good luck to you!

Hello, my name is Quiana and i am very intrested in becoming a full figure model. I have always wanted to model but society makes people think that you have to be a size 4, but i'm here to let everybody know that you don't have to be. I am 5'10 and about 210 give or take a few pounds and i would love to be in the modeling industry..

HI,I AM VERY INTERESTED IN PLUS SIZE MODELING.

-- Contributed by: LAKISHA JONES

That's great, Andrea. You certainly sound like you have the right attitude! All I can advise is to get a portfolio together and send it out to different agencies who represent plus size models. However, I will caution you that your height may work against you. Most models (except in the petite division) need to be at least 5'9. Good luck!

-- Contributed by: Del Sandeen

Yes hello , My name is Andrea Elias I am 24 years old 5'4 250 maybe a little more but it doesn't look as though I am that big but I been wanting to become a plus size modeling since I was about 14 years old so my mom got me in a couple of pageant's I never actually won the contest but I always won photogenic. So I believe that I do have what it takes to be the best plus size model that ever walk on the face of the earth. I believe I have a beautiful smile and a wonderful personality. When you put me in front of the camera it's just natural for me to go into different poses. All I need is a chance for somebody to believe in me the way I believe in myself

Hi Savannah--

Thank you, but we're not an agency. We just try to provide information. Your best bet is to contact a modeling agency with a solid reputation. AM Pittsburgh Models is one agency who represents plus size models.

hi my name is denise and i was thin king about becoming a plus size model but never new the opportunity ever really existed for full figured women like myself and i would love to model but i dont want to be a sleezy sexy model.

-- Contributed by: denise sweezy

Hi Isabel-- I can't answer your question for sure. All I can advise is for you to look into modeling agencies who represent plus size women. Reputable agencies will NOT charge you money, so beware of any agency who asks for money upfront OR who guarantees they'll find you work.

A lot depends on the needs of the fashion industry, as well. Some publications need models of a certain age or a certain size, while others only want the young, skinny girls.

Also, to be honest, your height may be a factor. Even plus size agencies prefer taller women, around 5'10 and up. Sorry. There are agencies that represent petite models--they define petite as 5'7 and under for modeling--but they may want smaller size petites.

You'd have to talk to someone who's knowledgable about the industry to get some more definite answers. Hope this helps a little.

Hi Mauricesa, Please follow the advice in this article as well as checking out the links we've provided if you're determined to become a model. There are many different modeling needs, including petite and plus size women, so you can definitely make it if you have what it takes. Best of luck!

Hi i am a very pretty full figure women and would like to show my beuty to the real world!

-- Contributed by: Patricia Michelle Thompson

Hi Christina and Patience-- One thing you can do is contact modeling agencies in your city or town. It helps if you live in a metropolitan area because cities will have more opportunities than rural areas. I would caution you against spending a lot of money or people who tell you that you need to spend thousands of dollars to get a portfolio together. There are a lot of scam artists out there. Look in your local newspaper for any upcoming events that need models and see if they're looking for full figured models. Ask around among people you know. Send your best photos to modeling agencies, especially ones that represent plus size models. Try this link: http://www.minxmodels.com/

Good luck!
